Description
CHYPRE IL EST UNE ILE
It was the title that the late and so talented photographer Andreas Malecos gave to the book, when we published the first edition in 1977. We thought that this title was a good invitation to visit the island of Cyprus.
An island for a foreigner is an enigmatic closed world, but also a complex and rich world he will discover gradually either by himself or under the guidance of some mentor. In fact this book is intended not so much for all those who dream of visiting Cyprus “for sea, sun and sex”, but rather, for those who already visited it and want to remember and better understand how life is in this island.
The truth is that there are many other books on the same subject. Why another one? This edition is the fourth one of the same book first published in 1977 by the Philippides publishing firm. It was based on the photographs of Andreas Malecos. A second edition was printed in 1987 and a third edition under a new cover was published in 1996. Time has passed and Cyprus has changed. Andreas Malecos left us. Takis Philippides had a strong desire to see a fourth edition of this book and his wish became true thanks to the Entipis publishing firm that offered its collaboration. I did too, perhaps because I wanted to leave a testimony of my experience in the island from the point of view of a foreigner who has been living in Cyprus for more than fifty years and has loved the place, in spite of the fact that I have also lived through its political turmoils.
My desire also is to see a version of this book in French, because I have in mind my French compatriots with whom I have always dreamt of sharing my experience. I am happy that this book will be published just when the Republic of Cyprus has celebrated her 50th anniversary. Let this book be my personal offering to my adopted country.
